Post-Pandemic Aftershocks

COVID-19 revealed the degree to which business continuity depends on sound health care strategy and the importance of workforce health. Certain post-pandemic aftershocks are already evident: lack of access to equitable and affordable health care, an emergent mental health epidemic and the aftermath of delays in care. Panelists will discuss strategies to overcome these challenges, such as navigation integrated with virtual care to improve access and quality, particularly in vulnerable populations; management of chronic conditions and COVID-19 “long haulers;’ and the prioritization of mental health for individuals and families across the continuum, particularly in the wake of collective trauma. Technology as a contributor to existing and anticipated challenges will be explored, along with other strategies and recommendations for large employers.

As part of this presentation, the speakers will discuss how the social determinants of health can be addressed through innovative health and pharmacy benefit design; explain how the four A’s—affordability, awareness, access, and assumptions—act as barriers to achieving equitable employee health while also driving up plan costs; and share strategies that employers can deploy to leverage benefits to address these health disparities.
